Experiential evidence
Psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin)
5-HT2A agonist·Recreational / illicit
Effect across the cycle
DesireMixed: Variable and set/setting dependent.
ArousalMixed: Heightened sensory awareness, but altered consciousness can intrude.
PerformanceInhibitory: Acute performance often impaired during the experience.
ClimaxMixed: Reports range from intensified to inaccessible.
ExperienceFacilitatory: Emotional connection and intensity frequently reported; occasionally disruptive.
MemoryMixed: Vivid but distorted encoding of the experience.
Mechanism
Classic psychedelics are 5-HT2A agonists (LSD also hits 5-HT2C, 5-HT1A, dopamine and adrenergic receptors). 5-HT2A agonism inhibits sexual activity in male rodents but can facilitate in females; LSD-induced oxytocin release is 5-HT2A-dependent and enhances empathy.
Sex differences & notes
Anecdotal reports describe heightened sensory awareness, emotional connection and intense feeling; ego dissolution may enhance or disrupt the experience.
